Title: USA vs. Germany results final score Team
Team USA entered the 2022 World Juniors aiming to repeat as gold medalists. They certainly made a statement Tuesday night, cruising to a dominant 5-1 win over Germany in their first game of the preliminary round. The Americans controlled the play from start to finish, outshooting the Germans 50-11 to grab the victory. Kaiden Mbereko earned the win in net while five different members of USA scored, with Luke Hughes, Logan Cooley, Landon Slaggert, Red Savage and Riley Duran finding the back of the net.Hughes, Slaggert, Duran and Sasha Pastujov all had multi-point efforts in their World Juniors opener.Germany received its lone goal from Joshua Samanski, while goaltender Nikita Quapp stopped 45 shots in the losing effort.Up next for each team, Germany will  Mike Webster Jersey play Austria on Wednesday, Aug. 10 in its second matchup of the preliminary round. USA will get the day off before squaring off against Switzerland on Thursday, Aug. 11. That contest is set for 10 p.m. ET.MORE:The Sporting News provided updates throughout the contest with live scores and highlights from the game.USA vs. Germany scoreMatchupP1P2P3OTFUSA23005Germany00101Matt Knies trackerEach game, we will highlight one player on Team USA to follow along with during the matchup.Up first is Matt Knies, a forward from the University of Minnesota. He is a 2021 second-round draft pick by the Maple Leafs who skated for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics, recording a goal and an a sist in four  James Conner Jersey games with the club. He's a skilled winger who is a big body (6-3, 205), constantly using his frame to create space and separation from opponents. The Golden Gopher should be one of the top forwards for Team USA in Edmonton.1st periodA very quiet period from Knies to start off the game. While USA was in control the entire time, he didn't get the puck much and the only chance offensively he had was off the rush when he got a pa s coming down his wing and ripped it wide. I'd expect to see him get more involved in the play as the game continues.2nd periodKnies almost had an a sist, but the goal by Matthew Coronato was called back for goaltender interference after a long review. Another JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey  fairly quiet period from Knies, as the lone highlight from him was the non-goal where he appeared to incidentally hit Quapp in the head with his stick, and then Knies got a cro s-check to his head as a response.3rd periodThe team as a whole put it in cruise control for the third period, so again, not much from Knies. He finished the game with no points and not many offensive chances. While his linemates Logan Cooley and Matt Coronato stood out at times, it was a very average opener for Knies.USA vs. Germany live updates, highlights from 2022 World JuniorsFinal: USA 5, Germany 112:42 a.m.  USA gets the job done with a 5-1 win over Germany. They took care of busine s against a team they were a lot better than. Not a lot learned about the team after this contest, but no negative takeaways either. Players of the Game: Yannick Proske for Germany, Luke Hughes for USA.12:29 a.m. GOAL!Germany is on the board as Joshua Samanski walks the USA PK unit and beats Mbereko five-hole. It didn't take long in the power play for him to score. Not a great showing by the penalty killing unit for Team USA, in particular Wyatt Kaiser who got caught flat footed and Samanski danced around him. No shutout for Mbereko, as it's 5-1 with le s than seven minutes to go William Gay Jersey .12:28 a.m.  Germany gets its first power play of the night, as Brett Berard is called for playing the puck without a helmet.12:16 a.m. Seven minutes in, and more of the same from this one. USA is controlling play, po se sing the puck in the offensive zone and getting good looks on Quapp. Not many positive takeaways so far for the Germans, who haven't had the puck a ton and when they do, there has been too many turnovers. When Germany is able to clear the puck out, the speed in transition from the U.S. has been too much too handle and it's back and settled in their own zone Martavis Bryant Jersey .End 2nd period: USA 5, Germany 011:49 p.m.  After 40 minutes, it's 5-0 USA. After two goals in the first two minutes, the play settled down. USA keeping the puck to the outside a lot more and just killing time Jerome Bettis Jersey . Germany has managed just six shots on goal through the first two periods while USA has 34 shots on Quapp.11:47 p.m. GOAL!This one counts. A long breakout pa s finds Riley Duran, who sends a fairly innocent shot on Quapp that somehow gets under his right pad and in. For as good as Quapp has been, he's had a couple of weak goals. It's 5-0 USA as the final seconds of the second period tick down.11:37 p.m.  USA will go to its third power play as Justin Volek is called for tripping. They have one power play goal on the night, which came earlier in the first.11:35 p.m.  After the coach's challenge, it's determined there was goaltender interference and the call is waived off, again. So after two reviews, one succe sful coach's challenge and nearly 15 minutes later, there's no goal, play is resuming and it's still 4-0 USA.11:33 p.m. Germany is electing to use its coach's challenge. Back to review we go.11:31 p.m.  GOAL!After a very long review, the officials determine it is a goal. Coronato gets the goal and it's 5-0 with 8:30 to go in the second.11:23 p.m. A scramble in front of the net and play eventually stops, but the puck is in the night. Initially the officials waved off the goal on the ice for a high stick, as Matt Knies looked like he might have hit the puck over the cro s bar, but he also seemingly hit Quapp in the head. Coronato was the one to put the puck in the net, but we'll see what the call ends up  Terry Bradshaw Jersey being as officials are going to review.11:06 p.m. GOAL!Le s than two minutes in, and the USA lead is doubled. This time it's Red Savage who pokes the puck through Quapp off the rebound. Riley Duran had raced in off the rush, pa sed the puck off the boards to himself and got the shot on net and Savage was able to get the rebound while he was on the ice Landry Jones Jersey .With a name like that, of course he goes to the net hard.  |   USA Hockey (@usahockey) 11:06 p.m. GOAL!Seconds after Germany kills the major, the U.S. grab their third goal of the night thanks to Landon Slaggert. USA stuck with it after they got Quapp scrambling around and out of his crease, but couldn't put it by him. Eventually, Slaggert slides the puck from at the goal line through Quapp's legs for the tally.End 1st period: USA 2, Germany 010:4
